Skunk2 Coilovers Review

Skunk2 Coilovers Review

If you are looking for coilovers for your Honda (and other makes as well), Skunk2 is a brand you’ll want to check out.

Specializing in Honda for over two decades, the team at Skunk2 know their way around them and make a wide range of parts, as well as parts for other models as well. They also engineer and test all their products to ensure they are fit for purpose.

But just how good are their coilovers? Let’s find out.

About Skunk2

Skunk2 was founded in Northern California in 1994 and immediately began making a name for themselves.

In 1995, they made the first CNC-machined, adjustable Honda camshaft gears made by a US company, and by 1996 were making parts for Asian touring car race teams. They were also involved in other racing series including Speedvision World Challenge series where their parts were very successful, with many podium finishing cars running skunk2 parts.

They also have their own drag car they used to test and develop parts, known as Project Beta, which become the first 10-second, naturally aspirated sport compact.

They make a huge selection of parts for popular Honda models from engine parts to billet accessories, suspension and more.

Let’s take a look into their coilover options and see how good they are.

About Skunk2 Coilovers

Skunk2 Coilovers

Skunk2 currently offer 2 models of coilover:

  • Pro S II
  • Pro ST

They are primarily made for Hondas but they do offer them for the odd other car such as Mazda Miata/MX5 and the FR-S/BRZ/GT86.

The coilovers are designed and tested by Skunk2 in USA, and are made in Taiwan (like BC Racing, D2, A’PEXi etc).

Pro S II series

The Pro S series coilovers are only height adjustable, they don’t have dampening adjustment, and are primarily made as the entry-level coilover for street use.

They height is adjustable by the shock body, which means you get full suspension travel at all ride heights, and can set the spring preload.

They use a monotube damper which is valved according to Skunk2’s specifications, which is done specifically for each vehicle along with matching spring rates.

Pro ST series

The Pro ST series coilover are racing engineered coilover which are designed for the street car or daily driver that will see track use.

They feature the same ride height adjustability by the shock body of the Pro S II’s (which lower your car up to 3 inches), but the Pro ST’s also feature 12-level dampening adjustment.

They have 52mm monotube dampers with carbon steel bodies which provide extra strength and allow for larger pistons and valves and a higher capacity of shock oil and nitrogen, giving them more compression and rebound response. This significantly improves handling and provides extra durability during intensive driving.

The springs are linear and are made from forged AE9254V Chrome Vanadium, which provide more consistency and predictable vehicle behaviour. The spring rates are selected specifically for each vehicle with the dampers valved to match.

They also come with CNC machined anodized aluminium strut mounts with polyurethane bushings, designed for precise handling and feedback while maintaining ride comfort for the street. A padded spring seat at the top and nylon washers are the bottom of the springs are also included to eliminate noise and spring bind.

How Good Are The Skunk2 Coilovers?

Most things I can find on these coilovers are positive. A lot of people in the Honda community run them (no surprise) and are happy with the quality and how they perform, including on the track.

They are a good build quality, and are packaged well for shipping, with each coilover protected in its own individual box.

In terms of ride quality, the general consensus is that Skunk2 coilovers tend to be rather stiff for street use, even with the dampers set to the lowest setting.

That being the case, if you are not too picky about the ride, and are going to be using the car on the track, then Skunk2’s could be a good option.

If the car is going to be primarily a daily driver and you want to prioritize a comfortable ride, you might want to look elsewhere.

Other brands I would recommend in this price range:

How Low Do Skunk2 Coilovers Go?

Skunk2 coilovers will lower your car up to 3 inches (75mm) lower than factory, depending on the model of car.
