Megan Racing EZ II

The Benefits of Installing Coilovers on Your Hyundai Genesis Coupe
While the Hyundai Genesis Coupe was designed to perform well from the factory, and even came in a Track spec version, like most cars if you really want to get the most out of it, installing a set of coilovers is going to bring the best out of the car.
The factory suspension was designed to appeal to the widest audience, and for people looking to modify their car, often doesn’t cut it. Installing a good set of coilovers is going to do several things:
- It will significantly improve the handling on the car by being stiffer, reducing body roll and lowering the center of gravity
- Allow you to adjust the ride height to your exact desired height
- If the dampers have the option, allow you to fine tune the ride stiffness by adjusting the damper settings, quickly changing from soft to stiff and vice versa
Some Things to Consider When Selecting Coilovers for your Genesis Coupe
In order to get the right coilover kit for your needs, there are a couple of things you need to know and decide first.
Budget
The biggest dictator in what coilover kit you are going to get is budget. Generally speaking, the higher up in budget you go, the more comfortable, the better the quality and the better the performance of the coilovers gets.
However, there certainly are a good number of budget and mid-tier options that are going to give you a comfortable street ride and still be able to handle track use.
Just be aware that if you are after serious, track specific performance or you want a super comfortable ride, you are going to have to send a little more and get a higher quality kit.
What Are You Using the Car For?
What you are using the car for is going to be another big deciding factor. The needs of a track specific car which is competing in a racing series are vastly different from a daily driver that may see one or two track days a year, or perhaps none.
You’ll want to decide what the purpose of the car is and whether you need 3-way dampening adjustment with camber and castor places and spring rates and valving to suit track driving, or you want a comfortable ride for using the car on the street the vast majority of the time.
Once you know this, you will be able to select a kit that is going to give you want you are looking for, and that may not always be the best or most expensive kit on the market.
True Vs Divorced Rear
On the Genesis Coupe, the rear spring and shock setup are what’s known as a “divorced rear”. This means that the spring and shock are mounted separately, rather than as one unit like they are on the front.
Some coilover companies give you the option to choose divorced rear or true rear, while others make true rear only.
For street cars or occasional track day use, this is going to make a significant difference to you, so you don’t need to stress too much about this. The only note here is the true rear is going to be a little easier to adjust, since you don’t need to adjust the spring and shock separately (if they are the type that adjusts the shock body height).
For motorsport purposes however, you will often find that the true rear type is used, because they are lighter than the stock configuration and allow you to use universal springs which you can swap out for different spring rates if necessary.
So if you are building a track car, a true rear setup may be a better option.
On some cars, true rears can cause an issue whereby the strut tower is not strong enough to support the load of the spring, and they break, allowing the suspension to come through the top.
However, on the Genesis Coupe, this doesn’t seem to be an issue, as the factory strut towers have proven to be strong enough to handle a true-rear setup.
Gen 1 and Gen 2
There is also differences in the suspension between Gen 1 and Gen 2 Genesis Coupes.
Some coilover manufacturers made separate kits for each, while some have one kit that fits both.
Make sure to check the particular coilovers you are looking at buying to ensure they will fit your model year.
Conclusion
I hope this has helped you to decide on a coilover kit for your Genesis Coupe. If you have any questions or comments or would like to suggest another coilover for this list, feel free to post it in the comments below.
