In this blog post, I’m going to cover the benefits of buying coilovers for the Q50 along with the 12 best coilover options available on the market today.

The Best Coilovers for the Infiniti Q50

Fortune Auto 500 Series

Fortune Auto 500 Series for Q50

Lowering Range: 1-3 inches (25-75mm), Super Low kit goes 2.5-5 inches (63-125mm)

Spring Rates: 12 Kg front, 8 Kg rear

Dampening Adjustment: 24-level rebound adjustment

Price: $1799

If you are looking for a high performance coilover you can spec to your requirements, this is it.

The Fortune Auto 500 Series is a very impressive coilover kit offering several things few other kits do.

For starters, these coilovers are modular, meaning they can be upgraded. So if you find that you need to upgrade your kit, say with 2-way adjustable dampening and external reservoirs, you don’t need to buy a whole new kit. Instead, you send yours in to Fortune Auto and they will upgrade them for you.

These coilovers are hand assembled at Fortune Auto’s Virginia facility, and every single damper is put on a shock dyno, tested and matched in pairs to within a 3% tolerance. This ensures that every single kit that leaves their facility is made to the highest standard.

And to back that up, they offer a 5 year warranty, which is one of the longest of any brand and says a lot about how much they believe in their product.

The dampers are monotube, giving you 24 levels of rebound adjustment and use high pressure nitrogen and a high flow digressive piston which gives the driver more feel and control over the car. They have also incorporated a “blow-off” technology to keep the ride comfortable even over rough surfaces.

The springs are made from premium chrome silicon alloy which ensures superior performance, ride quality and a long life with minimal sagging. Swift Springs are available as an optional extra if you want to upgrade to the absolute best.

Fortune Auto will also customize these coilovers to suit your needs including custom spring rates and valving, and they even have a super low option if you really want to slam your car.

These coilovers are a fantastic choice for both street cars and cars that will see the track, and aren’t even that expensive compared to other high-end coilovers.

NOTE: These are only available for the AWD Q50 model at this time, so if you have a RWD Q50, you’ll have to go with another kit.

TEIN Flex Z

TEIN Flex Z for Q50

Lowering: RWD: 0.6- 3.9″ Front,  0.0-5.7″ Rear – Red Sport 400: 1.2- 3.5″ Front, 0.0- 4.7″ Rear

Dampening adjustable: 16-level compression/rebound simultaneous (1-way)

Spring Rates: 12 Kg front, 8 Kg rear

Price: $849

The TEIN Flex Z’s are easily one of the best coilover kits you are going to find under $1000. Despite the low price, TEIN has put together a very high quality kit that has some serious engineering behind it.

One of the most amazing things about this kit is that TEIN makes them specific to the region it is being sold to, in order to match the conditions that the kit is likely to see – whether that’s rough roads, harsh weather or something else.

This allows them to make the best kit possible for the customer, and is something I have not heard of any other company doing.

The dampers in the Flex Z’s are a twin tube design, which TEIN has chosen for extra ride comfort on the street. The smooth stroke of the twin tubes allows the dampers to follow bumps and rough roads better, making for a more comfortable ride at low speeds while keeping stability at high speeds.

They are also 16-level dampening adjustable, which is done with an “ADVANCE needle”, allowing you to fine tune the ride for both road and track use. This kit is also compatible with TEIN’s EDFC system which is an electronic dampening adjustment system that allows you to change the damper settings from inside the car, even while driving.

The oil used in these dampers is specially formulated to maintain a stable viscosity at all temperatures, which allows the dampers to have a smooth stroke and stable damping in all conditions. It also has anti-foaming properties which make these dampers suitable for intensive performance driving, even for extended periods.

Ride height adjustment is done by the shock body, which ensures that you retain full suspension travel at all heights, making for not only a more comfortable ride and better handling but also making sure the dampers last longer.

TEIN springs are well known for their resistance to sagging and are made from cold formed high-tensile SAE9254 steel, which ensures a long life and increased stability. They are powder coated with TEIN’s patented powder coat to prevent chipping or corrosion, even in the harshest weather.

Speaking of their powder coat, the shock bodies are also coated in TEIN’s special patented powder coat which is formulated to be extremely corrosion resistant. The adjustment threads have a special ZT coating making them resistant to corrosion in all weather conditions.

While these dampers are not rebuildable, TEIN has instead made them so that the damper insert can be purchased for replacement. Meaning that when you need to replace the dampers, you simply order new ones and swap them in.

Not only does this mean that you don’t have to send the coilovers to TEIN and pay for shipping, but you also won’t have to wait several weeks for them to get rebuilt. Instead, you can just swap the dampers out like you would if you were replacing the suspension.

TEIN have done it this way to keep the price of the kit low and to make it easier for the customer to swap them when the time comes. They will also revalve the dampers to suit whichever spring rates or settings you specify, so if you have decided to change the spring rate, they’ll make sure the dampers match.

All this for under $1000, TEIN have really put a lot of effort to make a superb kit for an extremely low price. You will have a hard time finding something better at this price level.

NOTE: Only made for RWD models at this time.

Features include:

  • Ride height adjustable by the shock body
  • 16-level dampening adjustable
  • Twin tube dampers for increased road comfort

The Godspeed MonoSS are an excellent option for those on a tight budget looking to lower their Q50.

These coilovers are specifically designed to offer the perfect balance of performance and affordability, and give you a surprising amount of features given the very low price.

The springs are made from high strength SAE9252 steel, and ride height adjustment is done by the shock body to ensure you have full suspension travel at all heights. They typically give you 1-3 inches of lowering compared to stock, depending on the model.

The dampers are 52mm monotubes made of “carbon seamless steel” which give you 16-level dampening adjustment. They are designed to handle street driving as well as track days, and these dampers make it easy to adjust the settings quickly when you need to.

Benefits of Installing Coilovers on Your Q50

Black Infiniti Q50 in the rain

The top 2 reasons people install coilovers are:

  1. To lower the ride height for aesthetic reasons
  2. To improve the handling performance of the car

No matter which of these two you are looking to achieve (or both), coilovers are one of the best choices you have.

Coilovers were originally designed for race cars to maximize handling performance and make it easy to quickly swap springs and adjust settings.

They have since been adapted for road use as a way to allow people to set the perfect ride height as well as tune the suspension to match their particular car’s setup as well as the driver’s desires.

Most coilovers kits these days also have dampening adjustment which allows you to fine tune the damper settings to be stiffer or softer depending on your needs, and quickly change them if you need to (if you go to the track, for instance).

While you could opt for air suspension if you are just looking to lower your car (I cover air bag suspension vs coilovers here in detail), coilovers give you several benefits that air suspension does not:

  • Coilovers are much more reliable, they won’t pop a bag or leak and leave you stranded
  • They are usually significantly cheaper than air suspension
  • Your car will handle better than with air bags
  • They will handle regular track use much better than 99% of air suspension systems
  • They are also lighter than air suspension

So, while air suspension certainly has its uses, for most people who want to either lower their car and improve its handling performance, coilovers are the way to go.

Conclusion

I hope this has helped you to select the right coilover for your Q50. If you have any questions about any coilovers on this list or anything in general, feel free to post in the comments below.
