TEIN Flex Z
Price: $739.95
Kicking off this list with the Flex Z kit from TEIN, these coilovers are, in my opinion, the best coilovers for daily driving on the market. They are also the best coilovers you are going to get under $1000.
TEIN is a very well known brand who make extreme high quality suspension, and this kit is no exception.
Tuned primarily for street use, this coilover kit has twin tube dampers which will give you a more comfortable ride on the road, and give you 16 levels of dampening adjustment. With that said, they do feature damper oil designed to handle extreme temperatures and be resistant to foaming, making them suitable for the occasional track day.
The ride height on these is done by the shock body, meaning you retain full suspension travel at all ride heights, which makes for a more comfortable ride and helps the dampers last longer. On the 2000 civic, the will lower your car up to 5.1 inches on the front and 4.9 inches on the rear.
They also come with aluminium top mounts with reinforced rubber bushes, as well as TEIN’s no-sag springs and their special patented powder coat and ZT coating which ensures they won’t rust or seize even in harsh weather environments.
The dampers on these are also made as replaceable inserts, which means that instead on sending your coilovers in for a rebuild, you just order replacement damper inserts and swap them in which works out quicker and cheaper. These can also be revalved to suit your requirements.
As far as “budget” coilovers you, I can’t think of any other kit that comes close to these in terms of quality and performance.
Revel Touring Sport
Price: $1139
If ride comfort is your priority, these coilovers are the perfect choice.
Made by Tanabe, a Japanese suspension manufacturer known for making “the quietest coilover on the market”, these coilovers are designed to give you maximum ride comfort while allowing you to go extremely low.
Ride height adjustment on these is also done by the shock body, which means the ride will be more comfortable even at extremely low ride heights and you are less likely to bottom out and hit the bump stops.
The dampers are monotube and give you 32 levels of dampening adjustment, as well as larger pistons and oil capacity which allows for faster damping force and more effective damping at all temperature ranges. The dampers, combined with the springs, have been tuned for the most ride comfort possible while still giving you a significant improvement in handling.
Revel also includes a set of coilover covers with this kit which helps to keep them protected and corrosion free, which is a nice touch.
For street cars and daily drivers where handling performance isn’t the highest priority, these coilovers are a great option.
Stance XR1
Price $1795
These coilovers are another great performance option for street cars.
Despite the name, Stance USA place a heavy important on the handling performance of their coilovers, and the XR1 kit are designed as an “entry-level” option that will give you responsive handling while being suitable for street use.
They feature monotube dampers with digressive valving and 16 levels of dampening adjustment. The digressive valving gives the driver more feel and stability as well as a high degree of responsiveness.
Like the other coilovers on this list, these also give you ride height adjustment by the shock body for full suspension travel at all heights.
The lower shock mounts on multi-link suspension setups like the EK Civic are CAD designed and made of aluminium for weight reduction.
This kit also features special anti-corrosion electrodeposition polymer coating which was specifically engineered for Stance USA, and the shock bodies have an additional zinc phosphate pre-treatment. This combination has exceeded 1000+ hours of salt spray testing, meaning you will never have to worry about corrosion or seizing.
Stance USA will also customize these coilovers to suit whatever requirements you have including custom spring rates and valving as well as Swift Spring upgrade.
If you are looking for a high performance street coilover that will handle track use and is made by a company with success in motorsport, these are a great option.
Benefits of Installing Coilovers on your 2000 Honda Civic
Installing Honda Civic coilovers is going to give you a number of benefits over the factory suspension. From the factory, these cars were made to cater to a wide range of people, and while there are performance versions such as the SI, they were not made with handling being the top priority.
By installing coilovers, you will see three main benefits:
Handling Performance
Coilovers were originally designed for maximum handling performance, and that is still one of their main benefits.
Due to their stiffer springs and dampers, combined with their adjustability, coilovers will significantly improve the handling of your Civic by lower the center of gravity and reducing body roll, and will allow you to fine tune their settings to get the handling characteristics you are looking for.
Whether you track your Honda or you just want to make it more fun to drive on the street, coilovers are going to make your car significantly more responsive and enjoyable to drive, especially through the corners.
Ride Height Adjustment
Ride height adjustment is another reason coilovers are an extremely popular option. Unlike lowering springs, coilovers allow you to adjust the ride height as much as you like, right down to the millimeter.
As ride height is an extremely important point with people who customize their cars, coilovers are going to allow you to set it exactly where you want it, whether you are looking to achieve a performance look and get the handling right, or you want to go as low as possible.
Dampening Adjustment
Dampening adjustment is another very beneficial feature of coilovers. While not every coilover has the ability, the majority today do. Dampening adjustment allows you to fine tune the damper settings and change them from soft to stiff.
This is useful both for people wanting a comfortable ride on the street, as well as people looking for optimal handling at the track. It also allows you to quick switch between the two, so that you can get the best of both worlds.
