Here is how to replace the front brake pads on the Honda Civic EF and CRX.
Tools You’ll Need:
- 12mm socket & ratchet
- Caliper piston tool or adjustable pliers
- Flat head screw driver (to pry out the old pads – might not need it)
- Jack & stands
- Wheels brace / socket to remove the wheels
How to Remove the Old Brake Pads
First, jack up the car and take the front wheels off.
Next, you’ll need to undo the one 12mm bolt that holds the caliper on. You’ll find this on the back of the caliper at the bottom:
Once you’ve undone that bolt, the caliper swivels upwards to give you access to the brake pads. You might need to pull the metal sleeve out a little bit where the bolt was, and you’ll probably need to use a bit of force to swivel the caliper up:
Now you’ve got access to the brake pads. They just pop out, pull them outwards away from the disc to get them out of their channels. You may need to use the flat head screwdriver to get them out, but they won’t be difficult:
How to Install the New Brake Pads
Once the old brake pads are out, you need to push the piston back into the caliper. You can use the caliper piston tool if you have one, otherwise adjustable pliers will do just fine. You may want to put something like a rag to protect the piston from damage, but if you are careful it should be fine.
Now you can put your new brake pads on. The pad wear tab goes at the top on the back pad, so make sure to put that in the right place:
When putting the pads on the front side of the disc, I found it easiest to put the bottom of the pad in the channel, then pull the top clip out a little bit, put the pad up to the clip and then push both in at once.
Now you can put the caliper back down and do up the 12mm bolt. You may need to push the metal sleeve for the bolt out a little bit so that the caliper can go all the way in place.
Make sure you do the bolt up tight.
That’s it, now all you need to do is bed in your new brake pads.
