Things to Consider When Buying Coilovers for Your 370Z
When buying coilovers for your Z, there are a couple of considerations to make in order to make sure you get a coilover kit that meets yours needs.
Budget
First and foremost is budget, because without the budget, you won’t be buying anything.
You need to decide how much you can spend, and if it’s not enough to buy a more expensive kit, then you need to decide what you are will to sacrifice.
The cheaper you go, the more likely it is that the coilovers will ride worse, won’t be made as well and will fail sooner.
So you need to be realistic with what you expect to get for your price range. If money is no object, they you just need to find the kit that meets your requirements.
What Are You Using the Car For?
The next big thing to consider is what you are using the car for.
While there are certainly better coilovers that can do it all, everything is going to require a degree of sacrifice, so you need to decide what the primary purpose of the car will be.
If it’s a track oriented car and your main goal is performance and chasing lap times, you have to be willing to sacrifice some comfort to achieve this.
If the car is going to be a street car or daily driver, you’ll want a softer setup that is more comfortable but may not handle quite as well as a track setup.
Do you just want to go as low as possible? Then you are going to sacrifice on both handling performance and comfort.
There are certainly kits that can handle it all and will do it fairly well. But again, there will be a degree of sacrifice somewhere.
Type of Top Mounts
The type of top mounts you get are going to affect both ride comfort and handling to a degree.
Now, since the 370Z uses a double A-arm suspension set up, the top mounts play a far less important role in handling performance than on a car that has MacPherson struts.
That being the case, because the coilovers won’t have an impact on the steering input, you can go with a rubber or polyurethane bushing to retain ride comfort in pretty much all cases.
If milliseconds matter to you, then you could go with a pillowball strut mount just to ensure you are not losing any time there. But for all other applications, rubber will be fine.
Dampening Adjustability
Most coilovers on the market today offer dampening adjustability, but realistically its mostly a marketing gimmick more than anything else.
You are probably not going to notice a difference between 16 clicks and 40 clicks, so the number of clicks should not be a selling point.
What is important however is whether you get independent compression and rebound adjustment.
For street use, this is not really necessary, and if anything will just complicate things. So 1-way dampening adjustment will usually be more than adequate.
However, on the track, it can be very handy to have 2-way and even 3-way dampening adjustment, so that you can fine tune your suspension and quickly change it for difference tracks.
What you use the car for will ultimately dictate which dampening adjustment options you need.
Height Adjustment by Shock Body or Spring Perch
There are two ways that height is adjusted on coilovers:
- By lowering or raising the whole shock body in relation to the lower mount
- By lowering or raising the spring perch, so the spring sits lower in relation to the shock
Personally, I prefer setup 1 (shock body), because it allows you to retain full suspension travel no matter how high or low you go – the spring and shock remain in the same relative position from each other, and move up and down as a unit.
When you adjust height by the spring perch, as you go lower, you lose a part of your suspension travel. The lower you go, the less you have. Most coilover companies have moved away from this method, but you will still find some that use it, such as KW.
This won’t really matter if you are not planning to lower your car by much. But if you are planning to go lower than 20mm (and inch or so), then you are likely to face issues with the spring perch adjustment design.
True Coilover Or Divorced Rear?
On the 370Z, the rear shock and spring are separately mounted. You can find coilover kits that both work in the same manner as OEM, as well as “true-rear” types that have a proper coilover for the rear setup.
Realistically, you are not going to notice a big difference between either one, unless you are competitively racing.
The true coilover type might be a bit easier to adjust, as you can adjust them together vs having to do the spring and shock separately. Other than that, there’s no huge difference, so don’t stress too much about it.
Conclusion
I hope this post has helped you to select the perfect coilover kit for your Nissan 370Z. If you have any questions or would like to suggest another kit for this list, feel free to post in the comments below.
