Silvers Coilovers Review: Are They Good?

Silvers Coilovers Review

In this post I’m going to cover a coilover brand that you may not have heard of before.

Silvers has actually been around since 1999 and have been making coilovers this whole time, however, for some reason they are not widely known, and have only been more regularly seen in the last couple of years.

About Silvers Coilovers

Silvers was actually founded in 1999 by a racer who couldn’t find the perfect coilover kit, so decided to build his own. Silvers has been actively involved in motorsport, specifically time attack and circuit racing, and they even won Porsche cup Asia twice.

What sets Silvers coilovers apart is that they do a few things that most other suspension companies don’t.

For starters, they manufacture all their own parts and components at their facility in Taiwan (they have a video of it on their website), and hand assemble every single kit they put together. None of the process is outsourced, it’s all done in-house by the Silvers team and built to order.

They also test every single damper on the shock dyno to ensure that every matching pair is within a 5% tolerance. If a damper fails the test, Silvers claim that they discard the internals and send it back for re-assembly.

All this allows them to ensure a very high quality control, extremely quick turn around times, low price and means they can custom make a suspension kit for you to your exact specifications – something most coilover companies don’t do any more.

Not only that, but Silvers pride themselves on being able to make the suspension kit within 10 days, even if it’s a custom made kit.

Everything I could find about the Silvers team and the company was positive, from the reviews of their coilovers to the customer service and the quality of the products.

The coilovers are high quality, they are packaged and protected well in shipping, and the team are good to deal with and quick to respond.

The dampening adjustment on the coilovers actually works and makes a difference – which is not always the case especially with cheaper coilovers where the “clicks” do practically nothing.

The “clicks” on the dampening adjustment are also reportedly very clear and audible – again, something that’s not always the case with cheaper coilovers where you can barely feel it and not sure if you’ve actually adjusted anything.

Currently, Silvers offers only two models of coilover. Let’s take a look at them both.

Silvers Neomax

Silvers Neomax Coilovers

The Neomax is Silver’s entry-level coilover and gives you everything you need for a street based setup that will see track use.

Ride height adjustment is done by the shock body, which means you are able to set the spring preload and retain full suspension travel at all height settings. It also means you can corner balance the car.

The dampers are monotube, featuring a 4mm linear piston with digressive valving and are 24-level dampening adjustable. This “hybrid” design gives you both comfortable ride quality and along with excellent handling and responsiveness even on the track – and the reviews back this up.

They also use the largest diameter that’s necessary for the piston shafts, which are made from chrome plated hardened steel, in order to be strong enough to retain lateral rigidity and not bend or bind under heavy load. This decreases premature wear and lowers the piston travel, making for the perfect combination of longer lasting shocks and weight savings.

The 52mm shock bodies are made from high strength carbon steel and are electroless nickel plated for corrosion and fatigue protection in harsh climates. Silvers say they use this over powder coat because it provides more protection, especially compared to the cheap powder coating used on coilovers at this price range which chips and scratches easily.

On multi-link suspension setups, T6 6061 Aluminium lower mounts are used, which are CAD designed to ensure OEM fitment and are lighter than steel components which reduces unsprung weight.

Applicable models also come with camber adjustable pillow-ball T6 6061 aluminium strut mounts.

Full list of features:

  • Ride height adjustable by the shock body, up to 3 inches lower than stock
  • 24-level dampening adjustment
  • Monotube dampers with 44mm linear piston and digressive valving
  • Carbon steel shock bodies, electroless nickel plated for corrosion protection
  • Specially designed locking collars that ensure the tool won’t slip while adjusting
  • OEM fit steel lower mounts
  • Aluminium T6 6061 camber adjustable pillow-ball strut mounts on applicable models
  • 18 month warranty

Upgrade options:

  • Super Low Kit option which lowers the car an extra 2 inches (5 inches in total lower than OEM)
  • Custom spring rates with matched damper valving
  • Swift Spring upgrade available
  • Rear adjustment extenders to make adjusting the dampening easier on models where it’s hard to reach

These coilovers are fantastic value for money and are a great choice for street cars and daily drivers that will see occasional track use.

Silvers Neomax 2-Way

Silvers Neomax 2-Way Coilovers

The Neomax 2-Way’s are a for those who are more serious about fine tuning their suspension. Their main extra features are the independently adjustable compression and rebound, and the external reservoir for the damper oil.

Offering 24-level rebound adjustment and 40-level compression adjustment (done at the external reservoir), this allows you to really fine tune the way the car rides and behaves, giving you control over how the car handles bumps, as well as the dive and pitch to improve cornering characteristics.

The external oil reservoirs allow for a larger oil capacity which helps to keep the oil cool and the dampers performing for longer during higher temperatures and intensive driving. They also allow for more nitrogen which means the shock needs less pressure to do its job. This is most noticeable in situations that require extended stoke such as hitting a rumble strip or sudden drops of the tyre.

Full list of features:

  • Ride height adjustable by the shock body, up to 3 inches lower than stock
  • 24-level rebound dampening adjustment and 40-level compression adjustment
  • External reservoirs
  • Koyo Japan radial bearings on McPherson strut models
  • Monotube dampers with 44mm linear piston and digressive valving
  • Carbon steel shock bodies, electroless nickel plated for corrosion protection
  • Specially designed locking collars that ensure the tool won’t slip while adjusting
  • OEM fit steel lower mounts
  • Aluminium T6 6061 camber adjustable pillow-ball strut mounts on applicable models

These coilovers are perfect for those serious about the track or performance driving who want to be able to fine tune their suspension exactly as they need it.

Conclusion

According to everything I can find, Silvers are an excellent option if you want coilovers for your car. Everyone from Honda to Porsche drivers have given them good reviews, and they are doubly impressive given their relatively low price.

They made two suspension options which cater for almost everyone’s needs, whether street or track, and make for a great alternative to BC Racing or Fortune Auto coilovers, while giving you more features than the BC Racings and being cheaper than the Fortune Autos.

Overall, you can’t go wrong with a set of Silvers coilovers for your car.

FAQ About Silvers Coilovers

Are Silvers Coilovers Good?

Yes, Silvers are good coilovers which are hand made and every damper is tested to ensure they are high quality. You will find many good reviews about them from Honda to Porsche owners.

Where Are Silvers Coilovers Made?

Silvers Coilovers are made in Taiwan at Silvers’ manufacturing facility. All parts of the coilovers are made in-house by the Silvers team, and the coilovers are all hand assembled and every damper is tested on a shock dyno to ensure the highest quality.

How Low Do Silvers Coilovers Go?

Silvers coilovers give you a lowering range of 1 to 3 inches lower than factory on most cars. If you opt for the Super Low Kit, they will go up to 4.5-5 inches lower than factory. The maximum height you can raise your car to on the Super Low Kit is 1-1.5 inches lower than factory.

Do Silvers Coilovers Come Preloaded?

No, Silvers coilovers come with 0 preload unless you get the Swift Springs. Silvers actually recommends for you install them and drive the car with no preload for a few hundred miles to let the suspension settle, then set 3-5mm of preload. If you opt for the Swift Spring upgrade, then they will come preloaded, as Swift Springs do not need to settle.

Why Didn’t My Silvers Coilovers Have a Camber Plate?

If your Silvers coilovers came without a camber plate, that means your car does not have McPherson strut suspension and the camber must be set by using adjustable A arms (wishbones). Only McPherson struts can adjust camber by the adjustable strut mount.

How Do I Adjust Silvers Neomax?

To adjust the ride height on your Silvers Neomax coilovers, you need to loosen the bottom locking collar, wind the shock body up or down, and then tighten the locking collar to lock it in place. To adjust dampening, you need to twist the knob at the top of the shock shaft.

Silvers Neomax Coilovers vs BC racing

Due to being a very similar price and similar specs, Silvers coilovers often get compared to BC Racing coilovers. They both make a good quality kit, but the Silvers come with a longer warranty and the option to upgrade, whereas the BC Racing have a more proven track record with a lot more people using them.

In reality, both are a good option, but if you think you will need to upgrade later on, get the Silvers Neomax.
